DICER™ Bikes

I recently spent some time in China.  A month and a half in fact.  Mostly in Shanghai on a freelance project, but this time allowed me to travel to Tianjin - the home of the Flying Pigeon - where I spent an afternoon with the GM at the factory before catching the train onto Beijing.
So after some careful planning, and researching of suppliers, I've decided the Screaming Pigeon will go into production.  Well a limited run of 20 different designs/colour schemes to begin with.

Peter Von Baron

This project has been a long time in the making.

Peter Von Baron, the character, was conceived by three good mates one evening over a beer.  Soon after this flash of genius, we commissioned the suit of armor to be made by the very talented Valkrye from the ring pull's of Baron's beer cans - each tab was cut, folded, and woven into the next.  From here the idea sat idle for close to 9 months when, with the assistance of Dan Stevenson, we produced, shot and edited this short introductory web film.  It's just begging to be presented to the Baron's beer client at APB in Singapore.

One Show Finalist - Mercedes-Benz

The tv component of the BlueEFFICIECNY campaign was just shortlisted as a finalist at One Show 2011 for film. Quite proud of this for two reasons.  The first is obviously being up for the pencil, the second being the fact I directed these spots myself within a limited budget.

The beginnings of 'The Homing Pigeon'

In order to build something unique, I'm marrying the simplicity and beauty of the twin-bar Chinese roadster bicycles with the early motorbike, or board track racer's.
The first steps in modification to Board Track Racer Project # 2.

A short film project.

After many months in the making, 'Big Feet' is finished.
An idea which was born out of from a brainstorm session for an uninspiring advertising brief for a well known shoe company. A brief which as it turned out was perhaps more inspiring than we realised.  With the help of Allan Myles (DOP), Mel at Lava films, VHQ Post, and Ben Rosen and Paul Searles of The Gunnery, we've finished it, just in time for Tropfest 2011 - the World's largest short film festival. www.tropfest.com/au
Now we wait...

Two new Projects.

The 'Pigeonator' is somewhat a success.  Riding around Singapore on a barley-legal motorized pushbike got quite a few looks.  With encouragement from friends I've penciled a couple more designs -  inspired by the Board Track Racers of America - from the 1900's.

A twin tank design - The 'Homing Pigeon' with reversed handlebars

Board Track Racers

The Board Track Racers of the 1900-1920's were simply awesome machines.  Usually just a modified bicycle frame with the addition of a 2 cylinder engine, these crazy cats road up to 100mph around a timber velodrome-like track with an incline of up to 60degrees - and without brakes!
The inspiration for Board Track Racer Project #'s 2 and 3.

The 'Pigeonator'

The idea to motorize a bicycle came from my visit back home to Melbourne last Xmas.  I saw a guy in Fitzroy getting around on a cool custom bicycle - with a single cylinder engine.
As soon as I returned to Singapore, I purchased an engine kit from China. I wanted something a little different, and realized I was surrounded by vintage roadster-style bicycles.
I managed to buy one from an old man, and the disassembly began. With the addition of custom designed twin petrol tanks - the 'Pigeonator' was born.  A Chinese-inspired hot-rod/throw-back to the early motorcycles of the 1900's.

This thing kept me awake for many nights...

My 1968 Pontiac Firebird Sports Coupe.

It was a basket case when I bought it.  Sitting in a shed, stripped and in pieces.  All the stainless trim and interior stacked inside the vehicle, along with several other boxes of bits and parts.  The engine sat a few meters behind it, in a sad and sorry state.

I could see it had potential, and it was a complete numbers-matching car.  The motor was the original that rolled off the assembly line with this car in 1968.  This Firebird was also heavily optioned, with power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, AF/FM radio (very rare) and had been fitted with a custom sports woodgrain steering wheel.
It took me 4 months, many weekends, and many sleepless nights.  But well worth putting this beauty back on the road.
